LinkedIn for Outlook brings together the most popular professional network with the world’s leading professional Inbox. Here are some of the things you can do today by downloading the beta:

• Connect to your LinkedIn account to view your colleagues’ status updates and photos next to an e-mail message they sent you.
• Your colleagues’ latest contact information from LinkedIn automatically updates his or her Outlook contact. Whenever someone changes a phone number, e-mail address, or other contact details, it’s automatically updated in Outlook — you are always up to date.
• Synchronize your mobile phone with Outlook to stay up-to-date — you don’t have to worry about keeping track of new phone numbers and contact info — contacts’ information from the Web is synchronized to your mobile phone.

You can view friends’ activities, photos, and status updates within Outlook — as well as grow your network by adding friends from the same view. Both Facebook for Outlook and MySpace for Outlook will be available later this year as our official release of Office 2010 approaches.

Finally, its important to mention that with multiple professional and social networks available for the Outlook Social Connector, the design of the OSC is such that your privacy and permissions settings on each of the networks you use are represented and respected within this experience. For example, if your profile photo and job title are publicly listed on a given network, then OSC users will see your photo and job title when receiving an e-mail from you (if they use that same network). Similarly, if you choose to restrict profile access on a given network, the OSC will respect that privacy. The goal of the OSC is not to create another social network or set of privacy settings for you to manage, but rather to bring the networks you already value and use to the Outlook experience.

Google launched Buzz last Tuesday to the public after its announcement. The new service piggybacks off Gmail automatically so users do not have to update their email account. According to USA Today, Buzz has been receiving harsh criticism over its default privacy settings as it taps into your Gmail contacts list.

This integration was done for the most part under the radar causing many to raise concerns over the way it was implemented. Buzz leeches off your contacts list by auto-following those who you may email frequently with. This is similar to Twitter where users can follow someone.

The controversy is around the “auto-follow” feature that automatically links those who you email frequently with in your Gmail account to Buzz. When posting something onto Buzz everyone can see who is following you. Basically this allows strangers to see who you email with frequently.

The problem is that most people don’t want the world to know who they email frequently with. Google attempted to rectify the problem by revising the privacy settings so that users have to jump through a few more hoops before being able to post. Some critics have even asked Google to completely disable the “auto-follow” feature from their Gmail accounts as they feel it violates their email privacy.

Buzz is definitely a brilliant idea as it seamlessly provides a new service without having the users sign up for something new. This pretty much tackles the main entry barrier for most users. However, Google will need to be extra careful since the way Buzz is implemented into Gmail could potentially be a nightmare when dealing with hackers and spammers.

We believe you should be able to connect with your Facebook friends everywhere. We’re happy to announce that now you can with Facebook Chat. Starting today, the more than two billion chat messages sent on the site every day can be sent from your favorite desktop instant messaging client.

By integrating Facebook Chat with your preferred instant messenger, you’ll never miss a message when you have to navigate away from Facebook and you’ll be in control of how and where you chat with your Facebook friends. Simply connect your Facebook account with the instant messaging client of your choice and start chatting. You will not need to stay logged in to Facebook.com to continue to access your Facebook friends.

If you don’t want all of your online friends to appear, you can adjust which Friend Lists show up in chat by adjusting them on Facebook. To go offline, you can either close your instant messaging client or click “go offline” in your Facebook Chat options. As always, your conversations will remain completely private and only between you and your Facebook friends

To make Facebook Chat available everywhere, we are using the technology Jabber (XMPP), an open messaging protocol supported by most instant messaging software, including iChat, Pidgin, Adium, Miranda and more.

The search-engine giant, which recently tweaked its search function to allow easier access to social media results, has planned an event for Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET at its California headquarters.

That comes a day after the Wall Street Journal quoted “people familiar with the matter” saying the feature would allow Facebook-style status updates, as well as pinging when users post something to affiliated sites like YouTube or Picasa.

If it appears as described, it would be a sort of anti-Twitter, making a user’s updates private by default, as opposed to open, as they are on the micro-blogging site.

The hands-down leader in the search engine world, Google has been branching out on projects that include its Nexus One smartphone — the company’s first foray into hardware marketing.

Late last month,Google announced that people could tweak their accounts to make results related to friends, co-workers and other members of their social networks appear above all other results.

The Social Search feature was introduced to a limited number of Google users last year and was made available to everyone in beta status on January 28.

The change came with a hint of more things to come.

“This is just a first step in our ongoing effort to ensure that Google Web search is always as social as the Web itself,” the company said in an instructional video posted to its official blog.

We reached out to Facebook about the mysterious application. They’ve directed us to a Facebook Music Player app that appears on some Facebook Pages, and say that there may be a bug that’s showing some Pages apps on the editapps.php page (they’re looking into the issue). That may well be the case, but the Pages music player application has a different Application ID than this new one does — it doesn’t look like they’re the same thing. Still, Facebook’s spokesperson was pretty clear that there was no new Facebook Music app, stating, “We have no plans to launch a music service on Facebook.”

Facebook long considered launching a free music service, and previously engaged in talks with multiple different streaming services to power the site.  Obviously those didn’t pan out, and in light of Facebook’s promotion of third party apps and pages, they may have decided to ditch the idea entirely.
